Wine bottle bases

Call me a little stupid, but after all these years of wondering why, why do wine bottle bases vary in shape? You can search the internet but still many differing answers are given, from how the bases are shaped to help stack the bottles facing down to how the bottles are held by the base one handed to pour – I would have poured the wine all over the guest!

I can not find a definitive answer anywhere! Does anyone actually know the true reason for these shaped bases? Some – ok most - of the bottles I use are pretty much flat. Most folks I have asked think the deeper the concaved base the better the quality of wine?

The five photos show the varying depths of the base, all these bottles were in the price range of £3.00 - £4.50

Does the depth relate to the % alcohol of the wine, deeper the concave the stronger the wine? Is it related to adding strength to the bottle?

Answers very welcome from all you connoisseurs’ out there!!!
